St Martin is half French and half Dutch (St. Maarten is actually autonomous now). This dual status gives rise to two interesting cultures on one island. The French side is famous for its cuisine particularly in the village of Grande Casse, its quaint capital town of Marigot and its nude beach at Baie L’Orient. The Dutch side is known for duty free shopping and its crescent shaped sandy beach and port facility at Phillipsburg. It is also a destination on the cruise ship circuit and is known for its mega yacht facilities inside the lagoon at Simpson Bay. St Martin is also the premier hub for bareboats and crewed yachts offered for cruises to the surrounding islands, cays and beaches.
