Sandy Cay Donated
Sandy Cay is well known by day sailors from both the BVI and US Virgin Islands and visitor’s alike will be a National Park soon.
The Executors of the Estate of the late Laurance S. Rockefeller have confirmed their intention to transfer Sandy Cay to the BVI Government under the management of the BVI National Parks Trust as a permanent protected area no later than January of 2008.
Sandy Cay is a 14-acre undeveloped island located between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. The island has been maintained very much like a small park and is open to visitors who arrive by boat. Sandy Cay will be preserved as a combination botanic garden, nature reserve, and low-key recreational area. This will add an important dimension to the BVI’s environment, eco - tourism product. The beach is spectacularly beautiful with a white sand beach fringed by overhanging palms.
The late Laurance Rockefeller made a lifelong contribution to placing the BVI on the road to economic prosperity and environmental protection when in 1964 he completed construction of Little Dix hotel in Virgin Gorda. Later on he donated 86 acres at Sage Mountain on Tortola as the first protected in the BVI’s parks and protected areas system.
Other Rockefeller contributions to our parks system are: 260 acres at Gorda Peak, additional sites at Spring Bay, Devil’s Bay, and Fallen Jerusalen.

BVI is Preparing for the up coming Festival
This annual festival is also known as August Festival and is the territory’s Premier Cultural showcase with an array of activities and events. Certainly one of the biggest events in the British Virgin Islands, the annual celebration marks the 1834 Emancipation Act which abolished slavery in the British West Indies. All the villages celebrate with festive events taking place across the island. Visitors are in for some spectacular treats including live music, dancing, parties, tramps, panorama, costume and culture night, food fair, the Sunday morning well ceremony, Ms. BVI Queen show, the parade, aquatic sports and horse race, and August Monday parade all laced with a distinct BVI flavor. The calypso competition is hotly contested with performers competing to win the coveted crown of the Calypso King. There are also competitions to find a festival queen and festival prince and princess. Food and drinks are also important aspects of the celebrations and this is a great time to sample the delights of a Caribbean cuisine, including seafood, spiced chicken, barbecue ribs and much more.
